10 ways to optimise your site and get more traffic

Whatever your potential customers are searching for, you want your site to be one of the first things they see. An optimised site is easier for Google to read and understand, so it’s more likely to appear on page 1 of Google searches.

You don’t need to be an SEO expert to get closer to page 1. These 10 tips can help anyone make their business website more SEO friendly.

1. Create a keywords list

To decide which keywords to target, make a big list of words and phrases relevant to your products or services. If you’re a website designer, some of the best keywords to target could be ‘website designer’, ‘design a website’, and ‘hire a website designer’.

2. Update your page URLs

Every page on your site has its own unique URL. You can edit it to include relevant keywords and accurately describe the page content. This helps Google read the content, and helps your potential site visitors know what they’re clicking on.

3. Rewrite meta titles and descriptions

You can edit the titles and descriptions that searchers see in Google results. Every page on your site should have a unique, keyword-rich title and description. If you’re not sure what to write, have a look at other results and take note of how they speak to searchers and encourage clicks. If in doubt, keep it brief and full of value and information.

4. Organise your site’s structure

If your site has a few different service or product pages, keep them organised and separate. A photographer would benefit from having separate pages for weddings, engagement, and portraits, because a potential customer is likely to search for the specific service they want, instead of just ‘photographer’.

5. Add pages of helpful, interesting content

If people are doing research and looking for information, make sure your site gives them the answers. Content should be genuinely useful, answer common questions, and contain relevant keywords.

6. Make pages easy to read with H1, H2, and H3 tags

H1, H2, and H3 tags are one of the first things the Google algorithm will spot when it’s crawling your site. They’re like signposts in the middle of your website content, and should help both visitors and Google understand what the content is about.

7. Upload video content

Google is a big fan of video content. As well as written content, images, and downloadable PDFs, embedded original video content can improve your Google rankings, and help to explain and illustrate your service.

8. Update your blog regularly

Your blog is a good place to keep content fresh. If you plan relevant content ideas and upload regularly, your blogs are more likely to pop up in search results. This content can have all kinds of purposes - explain your product/service, help people make a decision, or show off your experience.

9. Speed up page loading

Page load speed is an important consideration for Google. You can test your website using Google PageInsights. Google wants to show websites that load fast, so the faster your website, the better.

10. Encourage people to click

Your optimised website content, meta tags, and blog posts should have one main goal - generating more business. Your content should be clear, informative, accurate, and persuasive. You can also use email marketing sign-ups and tracking codes to encourage site visitors to come back after they’ve left.
